The grade gap matters at both ends of A-Level, but for different reasons. Here's what each stage of the journey actually demands.
Year 12 sets the ceiling. The students who walk into Year 13 already on top are the ones who built foundations and routine early, while everyone else was still adjusting.
Year 13 is when everything counts. University offers are conditional, mocks weigh heavily, and exam technique decides whether the predicted grade becomes the actual one.

Students apply, choose courses and receive conditional offers before their final A-Level results exist. By results day, the important decisions have already been made on predicted grades.
UCL Mathematics asks for A*A*A. Imperial Engineering asks for A*A*A. Competitive Chemistry, Biology and medicine routes sit in the same territory. In 2025, only 2.1% of 18 year olds taking three A-Levels achieved three A* grades.
The average secondary school in England has 16.7 pupils per teacher. Great teachers deliver strong lessons. They cannot also create a personal weekly roadmap and chase every student's independent study.
In 2024/25, 18.14% of pupils in England were persistently absent, missing at least 10% of sessions. In A-Level Maths, Chemistry and Biology, one missed topic quickly becomes ten.
